Each 20mg vial of tesamorelin contains only the peptide as a dry powder, with no water, solvent, filler or second active ingredient. It is a single compound, not a blend, so any result in your experiment can be attributed to tesamorelin alone. Tesamorelin 20mg is the most searched vial size, and a tesamorelin peptide 20mg vial suits labs that run several assays from one batch. When you compare any 20mg tesamorelin, 20mg tesamorelin or tesamorelin peptide 20mg listing, check that the batch purity and the net peptide content are stated, not just the gross weight.
Research suppliers also list tesamorelin 5mg, tesamorelin 2mg and tesamorelin 50mg vials [CONFIRM: state which sizes you stock, or delete]. If you need tesamorelin 20mg, see our 20mg [LINK: Tesamorelin pen].
How Is It Studied in Laboratory Research?
Most published work on tesamorelin is clinical, because it was developed as a medicine. Laboratory and analytical research uses tesamorelin peptides mainly to study the GHRH receptor, the stability of modified peptides, and how peptides can be detected in biological samples. The questions what does tesamorelin do and what does tesamorelin peptide do are, in a lab, questions about receptor binding and signalling.
Growth Hormone Releasing Hormone Receptor Research
The tesamorelin mechanism of action is the same as natural GHRH. It binds the GHRH receptor (GHRHR), a class B G protein-coupled receptor found mainly on somatotroph cells of the anterior pituitary gland. Binding raises cyclic AMP inside the cell, which drives growth hormone (GH) production and its pulsed release. GH then signals the liver to make insulin-like growth factor 1, which is why tesamorelin IGF-1 appears together so often in the literature. Does tesamorelin increase IGF-1? In the clinical trials behind the US approval, IGF-1 levels rose, and the US label tells prescribers to monitor IGF-1. Because tesamorelin works upstream, through the pituitary, the GH response stays under the body’s normal feedback, including inhibition by somatostatin.
In the lab, this makes tesamorelin a useful reference ligand for GHRHR binding and activation studies in pituitary cells and receptor-expressing cell lines, alongside shorter GHRH analogues such as sermorelin and CJC-1295.
Peptide Half Life and Stability Research
Natural GHRH lasts only a few minutes in blood, mainly because DPP-4 cuts off its first two amino acids (Tyr-Ala). Tesamorelin’s hexenoyl cap blocks that cut. The tesamorelin half life in the original Egrifta label was about 26 minutes in healthy people and 38 minutes in people with HIV; a figure of about 8 minutes is quoted from the later Egrifta SV label [VERIFY SV figure]. Absolute bioavailability after injection under the skin is under 4%.
For laboratory work, the stability points that matter are chemical. Tesamorelin contains a methionine (position 27), which can oxidise, and asparagine and glutamine residues, which can deamidate in solution. These breakdown products show up as extra peaks on HPLC and as mass shifts of +16 Da (oxidation) or +1 Da (deamidation) on mass spectrometry. That is why the lyophilised form, kept cold and dry, is the most stable way to store peptides tesamorelin before use.
What Does Current Evidence Say About Human Studies?
All human data comes from trials of the licensed medicine, made to GMP standards and given under medical supervision. It tells you nothing about the quality or safety of any research-grade vial. The main published studies are:
- HIV-associated lipodystrophy: Phase 3 randomised, placebo-controlled trials in people with HIV and excess abdominal fat (Falutz et al., NEJM, 2007, about 412 participants [VERIFY]). These trials were the basis of the US approval.
- Liver fat in HIV: a 12-month randomised, double-blind trial of 61 people with HIV and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (Stanley et al., Lancet HIV, 2019).
- Cognition in older adults: a 20-week randomised trial of GHRH (tesamorelin) in about 152 older adults with and without mild cognitive impairment (Baker et al., Archives of Neurology, 2012) [VERIFY].
The evidence is limited to these specific groups, and the EU regulator was not satisfied that the data showed a positive benefit-risk balance. There are no approved uses outside the US indication. Nothing on this page claims any effect in people.
Tesamorelin vs CJC 1295, Sermorelin and Ipamorelin: What Is the Difference in Research?
| Tesamorelin | Sermorelin | CJC-1295 | Ipamorelin | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Class | GHRH analogue | GHRH analogue | GHRH analogue | Ghrelin receptor agonist (GH secretagogue) |
| Receptor | GHRHR | GHRHR | GHRHR | GHS-R1a |
| Length | 44 amino acids | 29 amino acids | 29 amino acids (+ DAC linker if “with DAC”) | 5 amino acids |
| Key feature | Full GHRH sequence + trans-3-hexenoyl cap | First 29 amino acids of GHRH | 4 amino acid substitutions; DAC binds albumin | Synthetic pentapeptide |
| Approx. half-life | 26–38 min | about 10–20 min | about 30 min without DAC; about 6–8 days with DAC | about 2 hours |
| Approved medicine? | Yes, US only (Egrifta) | Formerly, US (Geref, withdrawn) | No | No |
[VERIFY: half-life figures are approximate values from published studies and vary by study and model]
Tesamorelin vs sermorelin. Both bind the GHRH receptor, but sermorelin is the first 29 amino acids of GHRH, the shortest fragment with full activity. Tesamorelin keeps all 44 and adds the hexenoyl cap, so it resists DPP-4 and lasts longer. Sermorelin was once sold in the US as Geref but was withdrawn by its maker in 2008 [VERIFY]. Labs comparing sermorelin vs tesamorelin often use sermorelin as a short-acting reference and tesamorelin vs sermorelin as a test of how N-terminal protection changes stability.
Tesamorelin vs CJC-1295. CJC-1295 is also built on the 29-amino-acid fragment, with four substitutions for stability. Without DAC (often sold as Mod GRF 1-29) it is short-acting; with DAC it binds albumin and lasts around six to eight days in human studies. Tesamorelin sits between the two. Neither form of CJC-1295 is an approved medicine.
Tesamorelin vs ipamorelin. This compares two different pathways. Ipamorelin is a five-amino-acid peptide that activates the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a), not the GHRH receptor. Both pathways lead to GH release from the pituitary, but through different signals, so tesamorelin vs ipamorelin (or ipamorelin vs tesamorelin) is really a question of which receptor you want to study. The two are sometimes studied together; a combined product is a separate item, not this vial.
Tesamorelin vs HGH. Growth hormone (somatropin) is a 191-amino-acid protein made by the pituitary. Tesamorelin is a 44-amino-acid peptide that signals the pituitary to release its own GH. So tesamorelin vs HGH (or HGH vs tesamorelin) is a comparison between the signal and the hormone it triggers; tesamorelin contains no GH.
If you are looking for an alternative to tesamorelin for receptor work: sermorelin or CJC-1295 without DAC for a short-acting GHRH reference, CJC-1295 with DAC for sustained GHRH receptor exposure, or ipamorelin for the ghrelin receptor pathway.
Lyophilised Powder or Ready Mixed Solution: Which Format Is This Product?
This product is a lyophilised powder. The tesamorelin peptide is freeze-dried in the vial, which removes water and greatly slows the chemical breakdown that happens in solution. It is not ready mixed: the researcher dissolves it in a suitable solvent, such as bacteriostatic water or sterile water, when needed, and chooses the concentration for their protocol.
- Lyophilised vial (this product): longest storage life, concentration chosen by the researcher, tolerates short periods at room temperature in transit.
- Ready mixed solution: no reconstitution step, but a shorter shelf life once made and must be kept at 2–8 °C. If you need a pre-filled format, see our [LINK: Tesamorelin pen].
It is not a tesamorelin nasal spray, and Genesis does not sell tesamorelin tablets UK, tesamorelin capsules, tesamorelin sublingual tablets or any tesamorelin peptide oral product. A 44-amino-acid peptide is broken down in the gut, and no oral form has any approval anywhere.
Certificate of Analysis and Purity Testing for Each Batch
Every vial of our tesamorelin peptide is linked to a certificate of analysis (COA) through its batch number. The COA is issued by [ADD: testing laboratory, and whether independent / ISO/IEC 17025 accredited] and reports HPLC purity, mass spectrometry identity and appearance [CONFIRM: also peptide content, water, endotoxin?]. When people ask for the best tesamorelin peptide, this is the honest test: a batch-specific COA you can read before you buy.
How to Find and Download the Certificate for Your Batch
- Find the batch (lot) number on the vial label or outer box.
- Go to [ADD: COA page / “Certificates” tab on this product page] and select that batch number.
- Download the PDF. The batch number, product name and size on the COA should match your vial exactly.
- If you can’t find your batch or anything doesn’t match, email [ADD: support email] before using the vial.
How to Read HPLC Purity and Mass Spectrometry Results
HPLC purity. High-performance liquid chromatography separates tesamorelin from related impurities, such as shortened chains, oxidised methionine or deamidated forms. Purity is the main peak’s area as a percentage of all detected peaks at the stated wavelength (usually 214–220 nm). Look for a single dominant peak and a chromatogram attached to the COA. HPLC purity does not confirm identity and does not measure net peptide content, salt or water. A figure of exactly 100% is a warning sign.
Mass spectrometry. This confirms the molecule is tesamorelin. The average mass is about 5,135.9 Da, and electrospray instruments usually show multiply charged ions rather than the whole mass, for example about 1,285.0 (M+4H)4+, 1,028.2 (M+5H)5+ and 857.0 (M+6H)6+ [calculated from average mass; VERIFY against your COA’s reporting]. The COA should show expected and observed mass close together. A peak 16 Da higher suggests methionine oxidation.
How to Store and Handle a Lyophilised Peptide Vial
- Store unopened vials at −20 °C for long-term storage, or at 2–8 °C for short-term use [CONFIRM against label].
- Keep vials in their box, dry and away from light.
- Before opening, let a cold vial reach room temperature, so moisture does not condense on the powder.
- Handle with gloves, lab coat and eye protection, on a clean surface, ideally in a laminar flow hood. Follow your lab’s COSHH assessment and the Safety Data Sheet [ADD: SDS link].
- Dispose of used vials, needles and solutions through your laboratory’s chemical and sharps waste routes.
Storage Before and After Reconstitution
Before reconstitution: the lyophilised powder is stable for [__ months/years at −20 °C: CONFIRM], sealed and dry. Short periods at room temperature during transit do not normally affect a freeze-dried peptide.
After reconstitution: keep the solution at 2–8 °C, protected from light, and use it within [__ days: CONFIRM from stability data]. Tesamorelin in solution is more exposed to methionine oxidation and deamidation. For longer storage, divide the solution into single-use aliquots and freeze them; avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles, which can make peptides aggregate. Label each aliquot with the batch number and date.
Is Research Use of This Peptide Legal in the UK, and Is It Banned in Sport?
Is tesamorelin legal in the UK? As far as we can verify, tesamorelin is not a controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, so possessing it for laboratory research is not a criminal offence [LEGAL REVIEW]. It is, however, a licensed medicine in the US and has no UK marketing authorisation from the MHRA. Under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012, a product presented for treating people, or for changing how the body works, is a medicinal product, and selling or supplying it for human use without a licence is unlawful. That is why tesamorelin UK research products, including our tesamorelin peptide UK stock, are sold for laboratory research only, with no dosing advice or medical claims. This is general information, not legal advice. [LEGAL REVIEW: confirm with a UK regulatory adviser before publishing]
Sport: yes, it is banned. Tesamorelin is named on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List under S2, peptide hormones, growth factors, related substances and mimetics, as a growth hormone releasing factor. It is prohibited at all times, in and out of competition. Athletes covered by UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) rules can face sanctions for its presence in a sample, whatever the reason. [VERIFY wording against the current WADA list]
What to Check Before Buying Research Peptides in the UK
Whether you search tesamorelin buy, tesamorelin peptide buy or buy tesamorelin peptide, the checks are the same. The best place to buy tesamorelin, online or not, is a supplier that can show you all of these:
- A batch-specific COA with HPLC purity, a chromatogram and mass spectrometry, from a named lab. A generic “≥99%” claim with no batch number is not enough.
- Correct identity data: 44 amino acids, about 5,136 Da, CAS 218949-48-5. Any listing that confuses tesamorelin with sermorelin, CJC-1295 or GH is a red flag.
- Research-use-only labelling, with no dosing charts, before-and-after photos or health claims. A seller offering those is selling it for human use, which is unlawful in the UK.
- A UK address, UK dispatch and clear contact details, so you know where it comes from and who to contact.
- Honest pricing. Is tesamorelin expensive? It is a long, 44-amino-acid peptide, so it costs more to make than short peptides. Compare tesamorelin price per milligram of tested peptide, not per vial. Our tesamorelin 20mg UK price is [£__ : ADD]; a tesamorelin cost or tesamorelin peptide cost far below the market usually means low purity or under-filled vials.
Any listing of tesamorelin for sale should pass these checks, which is why the best place to buy tesamorelin online is one that publishes its batch paperwork before you pay.

What Is Tesamorelin and How Is It Related to Growth Hormone Releasing Hormone?
What is tesamorelin? It is a synthetic peptide built on the full 44-amino-acid sequence of human growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH, also called GRF), the hypothalamic hormone that tells the pituitary gland to release growth hormone. Tesamorelin keeps that sequence unchanged and adds one thing: a trans-3-hexenoyl group (a six-carbon fatty acid chain) on the first amino acid, tyrosine. That cap protects the start of the chain from dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4), the enzyme that quickly cuts natural GHRH. So what is tesamorelin peptide chemistry in one line? A stabilised copy of the body’s own GHRH, which is why it is described as a tesamorelin GHRH analog rather than as growth hormone itself.
It was developed by the Canadian company Theratechnologies under the code TH9507. If you are looking for another name for tesamorelin, TH9507 is the research code and Egrifta is the brand name of the US medicine. “Tesa” is a common shorthand, so what is tesa peptide and what is peptide tesamorelin are the same question. The name is sometimes misspelt as testamorelin, tesamorilin, tesmorelin or tessamorelin; all refer to the same compound.
Two common confusions. Is tesamorelin a steroid? No. It is a peptide (a chain of amino acids), not an anabolic steroid, and it has no steroid ring structure. Is tesamorelin a GLP-1 medicine? No. It acts on the GHRH receptor, not the GLP-1 receptor, and belongs to a different drug class from GLP-1 receptor agonists.
Amino Acid Sequence, Molecular Weight and Chemical Structure
Sequence (one-letter code):
`(trans-3-hexenoyl)-YADAIFTNSYRKVLGQLSARKLLQDIMSRQQGESNQERGARARL-NH2`
In three-letter code: (trans-3-hexenoyl)-Tyr-Ala-Asp-Ala-Ile-Phe-Thr-Asn-Ser-Tyr-Arg-Lys-Val-Leu-Gly-Gln-Leu-Ser-Ala-Arg-Lys-Leu-Leu-Gln-Asp-Ile-Met-Ser-Arg-Gln-Gln-Gly-Glu-Ser-Asn-Gln-Glu-Arg-Gly-Ala-Arg-Ala-Arg-Leu-NH2.
- Molecular formula: C221H366N72O67S (free base). The single sulphur atom comes from methionine at position 27.
- Molecular weight: about 5,135.9 g/mol (free base). The acetate salt is heavier, because each molecule carries roughly seven acetate counter-ions.
- Structure: a linear peptide with no disulphide bridges. The C-terminus is an amide (–NH2), as in natural GHRH.
- Identifiers: CAS 218949-48-5 (free base), 901758-09-6 (acetate).
Is This Research Peptide the Same as the Licensed Medicine Egrifta?
No. Tesamorelin is the active ingredient of Egrifta, a prescription medicine in the United States. So, is tesamorelin FDA approved? As Egrifta, yes: the FDA first approved it in November 2010 [VERIFY date] for one use only, reducing excess abdominal fat in adults with HIV who have lipodystrophy. That is the full answer to what is tesamorelin peptide used for in medicine. The US label itself says long-term cardiovascular safety has not been established and that it is not a weight-loss medicine. Newer formulations, Egrifta SV and Egrifta WR (approved in March 2025), are versions of the same licensed product.
Our vial is different in every way that matters to a regulator:
- It is a research chemical, not a medicine. It is not made to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards for medicines and has not been assessed for safety, sterility or effect in people.
- It is not made by, or connected with, Theratechnologies or any holder of the Egrifta licence.
- It is not authorised in the UK or EU. In 2012 the EU application for Egrifta was withdrawn after the European Medicines Agency’s committee said the data did not show a positive benefit-risk balance, and we have found no MHRA licence.
- It must not be used as a substitute for Egrifta, or on people or animals in any way.
