Who Is This MT2 Nasal Spray Made for? A Guide for Laboratory Researchers

This product is sold to adults buying for in-vitro or laboratory research, such as academic groups, contract research labs and independent researchers studying melanocortin signalling, peptide stability or intranasal formulation. It is not sold for personal use, cosmetic use or for use in animals outside an approved research setting. If you are looking for something to use on yourself, this is not the right product, and we would point you to a GP or pharmacist instead.

What Is MT2 (Melanotan 2) and Why Is It Studied in Peptide Research?

What is MT2? It is the common short name for Melanotan II, a synthetic peptide that mimics part of α-MSH, a hormone the body makes from the precursor protein pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC). Researchers use Melanotan 2 because it activates several melanocortin receptors strongly and lasts much longer in experiments than natural α-MSH, which breaks down within minutes.

Melanotan 2 Explained in Plain English: A Synthetic Peptide Used in Laboratory Studies

A peptide is a short chain of amino acids, the same building blocks that make up proteins. The Melanotan 2 peptide has seven amino acids, five of which are joined into a ring. That ring shape, plus two unnatural amino acids (norleucine and D-phenylalanine), makes it far more resistant to enzymes than the hormone it copies. In practice that means a stable, potent tool compound for studying a group of receptors involved in skin pigment, energy balance and other functions.

Where Did Melanotan 2 Come From? Origins and Research History

Melanotan II was designed at the University of Arizona by a team including the chemist Victor Hruby and the physiologist Mac Hadley. It grew out of earlier work on a longer, linear analogue called [Nle4, D-Phe7]-α-MSH, later known as Melanotan I or afamelanotide. The cyclic MT2 structure was published in 1989. Small human pilot studies followed in the 1990s, but MT2 itself never completed clinical development or gained approval anywhere in the world.

Two related compounds did reach the market. Afamelanotide (Melanotan I) was approved in Europe in 2014 and the US in 2019 as an implant for a rare light-sensitivity disorder. Bremelanotide (PT-141), which differs from MT2 only at its C-terminal end, was approved in the US in 2019 for a sexual desire disorder in premenopausal women. Neither approval covers MT2.

How Is MT2 Studied? Research Overview of Melanocortin Receptors and Its Mechanism

There are five melanocortin receptors, MC1R to MC5R. How does Melanotan 2 work in the lab? It is a non-selective melanocortin receptor agonist: it binds and activates MC1R, MC3R, MC4R and MC5R, but not MC2R, the receptor for the stress hormone ACTH. Activation raises levels of the signalling molecule cyclic AMP inside the cell.

  • MC1R sits mainly on melanocytes, the pigment cells of skin and hair, and controls the switch towards darker eumelanin.
  • MC3R and MC4R are found in the brain, especially the hypothalamus, where they help regulate appetite and energy use.
  • MC5R is found in exocrine glands such as sebaceous glands.

Because the Melanotan 2 mechanism reaches the central MC3R and MC4R receptors as well as MC1R, it has been used in research as a broad probe of the whole system rather than of any one receptor.

Areas of Melanotan 2 Research: Pigmentation Pathways and Metabolic Regulation Studies

Pigmentation pathways. Most published Melanotan 2 research concerns MC1R and melanogenesis, the process by which melanocytes make melanin. Cell and animal studies use MT2 to switch this pathway on without UV light, which helps researchers separate the effects of receptor signalling from the effects of UV damage.

Metabolic regulation. In a widely cited 1997 study in Nature, Fan and colleagues used MT-II to show that activating MC4R in mice reduced food intake, helping establish the melanocortin system as a key regulator of energy balance. MT2 has since been used in many rodent studies of appetite, body weight and energy expenditure.

Other areas. Because of MC4R activity in the brain, MT2 has also been studied in research on sexual function, which led to the development of bremelanotide. We describe these areas so researchers understand the literature. We make no claims about effects or benefits in people.

What Does Current Research Say About Melanotan 2, and What Is Still Unknown?

The receptor pharmacology of MT2 is well described, and it is an established tool compound in animal research. What is not established is its safety or effectiveness in humans. The published human data come from small pilot studies in the 1990s, and its Melanotan 2 half life, metabolism and long-term effects in people have never been fully characterised in large trials. Dermatology journals have published case reports and reviews raising concerns about unregulated use, and regulators including the MHRA have warned the public not to use it. Open research questions include how selective MT2 analogues can be made, how intranasal delivery affects absorption, and how central and peripheral melanocortin effects can be separated.

Melanotan 2 vs Melanotan 1: What Is the Difference in Research?

Melanotan 1 vs 2 is one of the most common questions we get. They come from the same research programme and both copy α-MSH, but they differ in shape, size, receptor reach and regulatory status.

Melanotan 1 vs Melanotan 2: Key Differences in Structure and Research Focus

Melanotan 1 (afamelanotide)Melanotan 2 (MT2)
StructureLinear, 13 amino acidsCyclic, 7 amino acids
Molecular weightAbout 1646.9 g/molAbout 1024.2 g/mol
Receptor profilePotent at MC1R, the main focus of researchNon-selective: MC1R, MC3R, MC4R and MC5R
Reach into the brainStudied mainly for peripheral (skin) effectsActs on central MC3R/MC4R in animal studies
Main research focusPhotoprotection and MC1R biologyPigmentation, appetite and energy balance, central melanocortin signalling
Regulatory statusAfamelanotide implant approved (EU 2014, US 2019) for erythropoietic protoporphyriaNot approved anywhere; research use only

In short, the MT1 vs MT2 difference is that MT1 is the more selective, skin-focused molecule, while MT2 is smaller, more potent and acts on more receptor types. A third relative, bremelanotide (PT-141), is often compared too. The MT2 vs PT-141 difference is chemically small (PT-141 has a free acid at the C-terminus where MT2 has an amide), but bremelanotide was developed for MC4R-related research and is an approved US medicine, while MT2 is not.

Which One Do Researchers Choose and Why?

The choice depends on the question being asked. Researchers studying MC1R and pigment cells specifically may prefer Melanotan 1 because it is more selective, which makes results easier to attribute to one receptor. Researchers studying appetite, energy balance or central melanocortin signalling generally use MT2 because it reaches MC3R and MC4R. Where a study needs a single receptor, many labs now use more selective research ligands instead of either.

Why Is the Nasal Spray Format Used in MT2 Research?

The nose has a large, well-supplied lining that some peptides can cross, and intranasal delivery is studied as a needle-free route for peptide research. An MT2 nasal spray lets researchers explore that route with a ready-made, consistent solution.

How a Nasal Spray Format Differs from a Lyophilised Powder Vial

A lyophilised (freeze-dried) vial holds MT2 as a dry powder that must be dissolved before use, usually in bacteriostatic or sterile water. A nasal spray is supplied already in solution, in a bottle with a metered pump. The powder is more stable over the long term; the spray is quicker to work with but has a shorter shelf life once opened.

Advantages Researchers Look for in an Intranasal Research Format

  • No reconstitution, so no weighing, mixing or calculation errors
  • A known, fixed volume per actuation from the metered pump
  • A format suited to studies of intranasal Melanotan absorption and nasal formulation
  • Less handling of glassware and needles in the lab

Limitations of the Nasal Spray Format Every Buyer Should Know About

  • Variable absorption: MT2 is around 1 kDa, and peptides of this size usually cross the nasal lining poorly and unevenly. Results from a Melanotan nasal spray can differ more between subjects than results from other routes.
  • Shorter shelf life: peptides in solution degrade faster than dry powder, and every opening risks contamination.
  • Limited published data: most MT2 research used other routes, so there is less intranasal literature to compare against.
  • Fixed strength: the concentration is set at manufacture; a vial lets you choose your own.

MT2 Nasal Spray vs MT2 Research Vial: Which Format Should You Choose?

Both contain the same peptide. The MT2 nasal spray vs vial decision comes down to stability, flexibility and how your study is designed.

Pre-Mixed Nasal Spray vs a Vial You Reconstitute Yourself: What Researchers Should Know

A pre-mixed MT2 spray is prepared under controlled conditions and checked as a finished solution, so you know exactly what is in the bottle. When you reconstitute a vial yourself, the final concentration and sterility depend on your diluent, technique and measurements. Pre-mixed saves time and removes a source of error; self-reconstitution gives flexibility but puts quality control in your hands.

When a Research Vial Makes More Sense Than a Nasal Spray

Choose a Melanotan 2 vial if you need long-term storage, a concentration other than ours, a route other than intranasal, or bulk material for analytical work such as stability or HPLC method development. Choose the spray if you need a consistent, ready-made intranasal solution and will use it within its in-use shelf life. See our [LINK: MT2 research vial product page].

You can download the product data sheet and the current batch COA [ADD: link / button] before buying. We recommend checking that the batch number on the COA matches the batch in stock.

Purity, Third-Party Lab Testing and Certificates of Analysis (COA) Explained

A COA is only useful if you know what it should show and can trust who produced it. Here is how we verify Melanotan 2 purity, and how you can check it yourself.

How Purity Is Verified by Independent Laboratory Testing

Samples from each batch are sent to [ADD: name of independent testing laboratory and its accreditation, e.g. ISO/IEC 17025]. The lab runs HPLC to measure purity and mass spectrometry to confirm identity, then issues a signed COA for that batch. Because the lab is independent of the manufacturer, it has no stake in the result.

What HPLC and Mass Spectrometry Results Tell You About a Peptide

  • HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) separates the peptide from impurities. Purity is the main peak’s share of the total, for example 98.5%. Melanotan 2 HPLC results should show one dominant peak.
  • Mass spectrometry (MS) weighs the molecule. For MT2 the main signal should match about 1024 Da (or 1025 for the [M+H]+ ion, or 513 for the doubly charged ion), confirming it is the right compound.
  • Together they answer two separate questions: is it the right peptide (MS), and how much of it is that peptide (HPLC)?

How to Read the COA for MT2 Nasal Spray Line by Line

  1. Product name and batch number: should say Melanotan II and match your bottle.
  2. Testing laboratory: name, address and accreditation of the lab, with a signature and date.
  3. Test date: should fall after the manufacture date.
  4. Appearance: for the spray, a clear colourless solution.
  5. Identity (MS): observed mass close to 1024.2 Da.
  6. Purity (HPLC): a percentage, with the chromatogram attached.
  7. Content or concentration: the measured amount of peptide versus the 10mg claim.
  8. Pass/fail against specification: each result compared with an acceptance limit.

An MT2 COA that leaves out any of these, especially the chromatogram or lab details, should be treated with caution.

How to Check the Batch Number and Product Label Against the COA

Find the batch number on the bottle label and compare it, character by character, with the batch number on the COA. The product name, strength (10mg) and dates should also agree. If anything does not match, do not use the product and contact us at [ADD: support email].

What ISO-Certified Manufacturing Means for Batch Consistency

ISO 9001 is an international standard for quality management. A certified manufacturer must document its processes, train staff, control materials and investigate faults, and is audited regularly. It does not test the product itself, but it makes batch-to-batch consistency far more likely. Our manufacturer is certified to [CONFIRM: standard and certificate number].

How to Spot a Fake or Unverified COA When Buying Peptides Online

  • No batch number, or the same COA used for every batch
  • No named testing lab, or a lab you cannot find or contact
  • No HPLC chromatogram or mass spectrum, only a purity figure
  • A test date before the manufacture date, or no date at all
  • Purity of exactly 99.9% or 100% on every product
  • Signs of editing: mismatched fonts, blurred logos, misaligned text

If in doubt, contact the named lab and ask them to confirm the report is theirs.

How to Store and Handle MT2 Nasal Spray Correctly

Peptides in solution are more fragile than dry powder. Correct Melanotan 2 storage protects the purity shown on your COA.

How to Store MT2 Nasal Spray Before and After Opening

Before and after opening, keep the bottle upright in a refrigerator at 2–8°C, in its outer box, with the cap on. [CONFIRM against label]

Ideal Storage Temperature and Protection from Light

Store at 2–8°C. Do not freeze the spray, as freezing can damage the pump and cause the peptide to come out of solution. Keep it in the box away from light: MT2 contains tryptophan, an amino acid that is sensitive to light and oxidation.

How to Keep the Spray Nozzle Clean and Tightly Sealed

Wipe the nozzle with a clean, lint-free tissue after each use, replace the cap straight away, and never rinse the nozzle with tap water, which can introduce microbes.

Why Moisture, Heat and Sunlight Can Reduce Peptide Stability

Heat speeds up chemical breakdown such as hydrolysis and oxidation. Sunlight and UV light can oxidise light-sensitive residues like tryptophan. Moisture and air entering the bottle can bring in microbes and oxygen. All three lower purity over time.

How Long Does MT2 Nasal Spray Last After Opening?

How long does MT2 nasal spray last? Once opened, use within [CONFIRM: in-use period, e.g. 28 days] if kept refrigerated, or by the expiry date, whichever comes first. Note the opening date on the label.

Does MT2 Nasal Spray Need to Be Kept in the Fridge?

Yes. Does MT2 need to be refrigerated? In solution, yes: keep it at 2–8°C, before and after opening. Short periods at room temperature during delivery should not affect quality, but put it in the fridge as soon as it arrives. [CONFIRM]

Signs of Spoilage, Contamination or Damage to Check for Before Every Use

  • Cloudiness, particles or a change in colour
  • An unusual smell
  • A cracked bottle, loose pump or broken seal
  • A pump that sprays unevenly or not at all
  • An expiry date or in-use period that has passed

If you see any of these, do not use the product.

How to Dispose of an Empty or Expired Bottle Safely

Follow your laboratory’s chemical waste procedures. Do not pour peptide solutions down the sink. Empty bottles can be disposed of in line with local rules once the pump has been removed. The SDS gives further disposal guidance.

Safety, Responsible Use and Research-Use-Only Notice

MT2 is a research chemical, not a medicine. This section explains what that means in practice.

What Does For Laboratory Research Use Only, Not for Human or Veterinary Use Mean?

It means the product is sold only for experiments in a laboratory setting, such as in-vitro work or approved research. It has not been tested, licensed or approved for use in people or animals, and it must not be swallowed, inhaled, sprayed, injected or applied to the body. By ordering you confirm you are buying it for research use only.

Why We Do Not Provide Dosage, Side-Effect or Usage Advice for Melanotan 2

MT2 is not approved for human or veterinary use, so there is no approved dose, and giving dosing or usage advice would mean promoting an unlicensed medicine. We describe published research so researchers understand the literature, but we do not give advice on taking, using or responding to MT2.

Who Should You Speak to for Health or Medical Questions?

For any question about your health, skin or a medicine, speak to your GP, a pharmacist or call NHS 111. For questions about changes in moles or skin pigment, a GP can refer you to a dermatologist. To report a suspected reaction to any product, use the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.

What UK Buyers Should Know About the Regulatory Status of Melanotan 2

  • Melanotan II has no marketing authorisation in the UK. It is not licensed by the MHRA and has not been approved by the FDA or the European Medicines Agency.
  • The MHRA has repeatedly warned the public not to use melanotan products and has treated products sold for tanning or other personal use as unlicensed medicines. It has taken enforcement action against sellers, including seizures and website takedowns.
  • Under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012, selling or supplying an unlicensed medicine is an offence. Whether a product counts as a medicine depends on how it is presented and what it is for, so research-only labelling, marketing and sales to research customers matter.
  • MT2 is not a controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.

This is general information, not legal advice. If you are unsure whether your intended research use is lawful, take independent advice before ordering. [LEGAL REVIEW: confirm this section, and the decision to list MT2, with a UK regulatory adviser before publishing]

Our Disclaimer and Responsible Sale Policy

All Genesis Peptides products are sold for laboratory research use only. How to Choose a Trustworthy MT2 Supplier in the UK

Quality varies widely between sellers of Melanotan 2 in the UK. These checks help you separate reliable suppliers from risky ones.

7 Signs of a Reliable Research Peptide Supplier

  1. A batch-specific COA from a named, independent lab
  2. HPLC chromatograms and mass spectra, not just a purity number
  3. Clear labelling with batch number, dates and full ingredients
  4. Honest research-use-only positioning with no health, cosmetic or tanning claims
  5. A registered UK business with a real address and contact details
  6. Clear storage instructions and cold-chain-aware packaging
  7. A returns policy in line with UK consumer law

Red Flags to Avoid When Buying MT2 Nasal Spray Online

  • Promises of tanning, weight loss or other effects in people
  • Dosing charts or “how to use” guides
  • No COA, a generic COA, or one you cannot verify
  • Prices far below the market, which can signal under-filled or impure product
  • Sales only through social media or messaging apps
  • No business address or company number

Why Purity, COA, Clear Ingredient Listings and Storage Instructions Matter More Than Price

Impurities in a peptide, such as truncated sequences or leftover synthesis chemicals, can change results and make experiments impossible to repeat. A full ingredient list tells you what else is in the solution, and storage instructions tell you how to keep it at the purity shown on the COA. A cheaper bottle that fails on any of these is likely to cost more in wasted work. When you buy Melanotan 2, check these before you check the price.

Questions to Ask a Supplier Before You Place Your First Order

  • Can I see the COA for the batch you will send me?
  • Which independent lab tests your products, and is it accredited?
  • What exactly is in the solution besides the peptide?
  • What is the in-use shelf life after opening?
  • How is the product packed and shipped, and how fast?
  • What happens if it arrives damaged?
